Our Computing/IT curriculum is designed to link across all areas of the curriculum. We have a bespoke IT suite, as well as a range of resources used across classrooms, including interactive whiteboards, ipads, beebots, sensing equipment, visualisers, sound recording equipment, microphones, etc.
The national curriculum for computing aims to ensure that all pupils:
- can understand and apply the fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, including abstraction, logic, algorithms and data representation
- can analyse problems in computational terms, and have repeated practical experience of writing computer programs in order to solve such problems
- can evaluate and apply information technology, including new or unfamiliar technologies, analytically to solve problems
- are responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.
We aim to teach children key skills and to then encourage them to apply these to enhance learning in all areas of the curriculum. School has a structured programme to teach children the importance of E-safety and to ensure they are safe online whilst in school we also have a filter system in place. Children are taught to keep passwords secure and are expected to adhere to an acceptable use policy.
Computing Curriculum Intent
At North Park Primary school, we intend that pupils should master computing to such an extent that they can both see the importance of and effectively make use of technology in their everyday lives, as well as educating them about the role that technology may play in their future careers.
Our children will be taught computing in a way that ensures progression of skills and follows a sequence to build on previous learning. In addition, children will be taught to use technology responsibly and carefully, being mindful of how their behaviour, words and actions can affect others, as well as having the necessary skills and confidence to ensure they can keep themselves safe online.
We aim to ready the children for an ever-increasing technological world, personalise learning and ensure inclusivity to meet the needs of all of our children. We have clear end points guided by the National Curriculum requirements. More recently we have incorporated additional sessions in our curriculum to cater for lost learning during Covid-19.
Our children will gain experience, knowledge and skills of a wide range of technology. These will be taught explicitly so that they can then be used to enhance learning opportunities across the wider curriculum. Technology skills will help pupils communicate, be creative and solve problems.
We recognise the importance of key computing skills at all ages and stages of learning from EYFS to Year 6 and ensure coverage by incorporating a range of current computing planning and resources and hardware.
Plans are regularly reviewed and adapted and skills-specific lessons are planned on a termly basis. We use Kapow resources as a core structure and further this learning with opportunities to apply IT across the curriculum. Pupils will use a range of programmes and IT equipment to learn about
- computer science
- digital literacy
- ICT skills
Opportunities for learning are extended through the use of technology across other curriculum areas, as well as enhancement through events such as E-safety day, assemblies and experience of technology in action, as used by visitors and on educational visits.
